Tips On Building Self Esteem Starts Here – Quick Start Challenge Week One

I’ve had the intention for sharing  tips on building self esteem for a long time.

In fact, it took me years  to even realise that I was suffering from poor self esteem.

I assumed that the critical way I felt about myself  was normal!

Tips On Building Self EsteemBut by reading and noticing how other people had lots of confidence, I started to question how I was.

I Never Seemed To Have Self Confidence

In fact I do remember one uncomfortable experience from when I was about eight years old.

For many people, I guess it wouldn’t have affected them. But for me – it spoiled my whole night

It was around Christmas time and my uncle and aunt and cousins were at our house.

They had come for what we called “tea” which was a meal starting at around 5 o’clock in the afternoon.

Because it was a special occasion the adults had decided it would be a good idea for the children in the family to entertain the rest of those present by singing a song or reciting some poetry.

That was one of my most hated activities.

I managed to put off having my turn for a long as possible and finished up being the last one to “perform” by reciting a poem.

I couldn’t get out of saying my piece… And so what did I do?

I insisted that I would only say my poem  if I could sit on the floor behind the settee where no-one could see me – and the lights were turned out!

The poem was called, “Jonathan comes when Jonathan hums when Jonathan mends the mat” and it has been burned into my memory forever through that experience.

Looking at me now you wouldn’t credit that that was me back then. And I’m telling you the Johnathon story so you can see where I am coming from.

Tips On Building Self Esteem With Dean Holland’s Quick Start Challenge

The trigger that finally decided me to start my Tips On Building Self Esteem Blog was starting  Dean Holland’s Quick Start Challenge!

And so, once again, I have been thinking about improving self esteem, and wondering which would be one of my “best” tips for anyone to start bringing a positive change into their life.

This Is My Tip For Bringing Positive Changes

If I could just choose one out of the many tips for building self esteem it would be this

“Just Do It”

because when we actually begin to realise inside ourselves that we CAN actually achieve things – and achieve them quickly – then the way we think about ourselves actually starts to improve.

“Nothing builds self-esteem and self-confidence like accomplishment.”
Thomas Carlyle

My First Tip For How To Boost Self Esteem

And so my first tip is to take action!

…. and stop waiting for things to happen!

Incidentally, Dean Holland would say it differently, he would say:-

“Don’t get it right – Get it going”

I Just Did It

And so I finally bit the bullet and started my journey to a better self esteem.

And I sincerely hope you will want to join me.

I didn’t spend hours working on this article in order to make it perfect – although that was what I would have done at one time.

I took notice of one of my own tips and just did it.

Dave very nice start with the Challenge. Also I can definitely relate. I have been in marketing for over two years and have had a bit of success, but have not been able to reach my goals. One of the reasons is I procrastinate on many things and end up getting nothing done or just very little of what I originally set out to accomplish. So the attitude of “Don’t get it right – Get it going” hits the nail on the head for me. Deans challenges are getting me to do things quickly and I am getting things done on a daily basis now. Its really been an eye opener for me. Keep up the good work. I think this will be a very helpful blog for lots of people.

Thanks Tim, it’s good to see you here.
I must admit that I do usually spend a lot of time thinking through the things I need to do and then I finish up with not enough time to actually do them.

I’ve noticed that the “Don’t get it right – Get it going” attitude does actually help me get more done.

Good luck with everything and keep in touch

Dave I believe many people can benefit from this challenge and you are so right, just get started. I believe that one of the reason why people self-esteem is low is because they always sit and think about all of their flaws and what’s wrong with them and never take any action working or doing the things that will help to raise their self-esteem.
Great post Dave. Keep up the good work.

      That is so true Taquila.

It definitely does help a person’s self esteem to just get things done, learn from what happened and then move on.
And then to look back on the achievements and appreciate what you have done can be very empowering.

Thanks for dropping by, hope to see you here again.

    Hi Dave

I can just imagine you hding behind the sofa reciting your poem! I expect we have all done that. I did! My mum had a visitor around and I was hiding before the sofa. I stayed there the whole time thinking the visitor wouldn’t know! When he got up to leave he said oh and it was nice of you to join us Kay!

Its easy to be more confident online than in person.

I agree with your tip – accomplish it and you grow in confidence. This whole challenge will produce a lot of more confident people I am sure.

      Hi Kay
You have surprised me because I would never have guessed that other people would have done the same. I guess the visitor who thanked you for joining him and your mum when you were hiding had a little chuckle on his way home…
.. maybe he was thinking that that was what he used to do when he was young!

And, yes, it is much easier to be more confident on-line.

It feels good that we are doing something that helps us grow in confidence while we are achieving other tasks, it seems like a sort of positive multi-tasking.

      Thanks for visiting.

    Hi Dave,

Great way to get the QSC going. I think this post should be required reading to our group of participants. I’m sure everyone has had some sort of bout with lack of self-esteem. For me it was public speaking, which I’m sure is very common. I just focused on a few kind faces and next thing you know I was done. Best wishes to you.

      Hi Rich

Many thanks for stopping by and letting us know what you think.
      I appreciate you comment.

Yes, you got it in one with the public speaking – well in “two” actually
      1. Problems with public speaking is a common thing, as you say. and
      2. Focusing on a few friendly faces is an excellent way to get rid of the nerves.

You’ve done great work so far on your quick start challenge. You seem to be doing very well.

      Best of luck to you!

        Hi Dave,

I came back to inform you that I have reviewed 138 blogs! You left a comment on my site about how I kept track of this. I did this all manually by writing down the domain names and checking them off as I completed them. Most folks would have used excel, but that made too much sense. About half way through, I came across Andy Lindsay’s blog that listed the entire blog roll (although I cannot completely confirm it is complete) on one page. Going forward, I used this list as a basis. I wanted to share with you that link:

I have also posted my findings from reviewing all of those sites. You may find it interesting.

        Take care,

Hi Rich, thank you for letting my know about Andy Lindsay’s blogroll.

That is a big help to start from.

I am going to work my way through the list, adding the blogs which aren’t listed as I go along.

          All the best!

    Hi Dave,

I like how you said self-esteem can come from taking action. “Just do it” or taking action is really important to get things done. If you can get that mentality, then you can really achieve anything. Good post and good read. Best of luck to you!

    • Dave E Wilkes says:

Hi Zhenwei, thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment.

Yes, I have found that good self esteem is strengthened by action – and, at the opposite end of the spectrum, it is weakened by any lack of activity.

One way that i think about it is that I don’t have time to allow myself to lose my self belief, I’m too busy for that!

And so, yes – providing we are going in the correct direction and carrying out activities that produce the results we want – we can literally achieve anything with that mentality.

Thank you for reminding me how easy and straightforward it is.

      Many Thanks
